Superb Pair Antique English Silverplate Classical Column Tall Candlesticks
Presented is an exceptional antique English silverplate pair of candlesticks,
dating to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The candlesticks are made in a
handsome, classically influenced form with square, cut corner bases and square
tapered column-form shafts. The bases are decorated with long acanthus leaves
and classical urns, with a gadroon border, while the shafts feature ram's head
masks, garlands, wreaths, ribbons and hanging bellflowers, with further acanthus
leaf and garland decoration on the socles. All the decoration is quite crisp and
detailed, very finely done. The bobeches have a bold beaded border design, and
are removable for ease of cleaning. The undersides of the candlesticks have a
green felt lining, so they will not scratch surfaces.
The candlesticks are in great condition. There is some minor wear through the
silver plating here and there, mostly just on the high points of the
decorations, but nothing more than you'd expect from age/polishing. No splits,
no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each candlestick stands about 12 1/8 inches tall. The bases measure about 5
1/4 inches square.
The total weight for the pair is 2.26 kilograms, or 4.98 pounds.
