    Galena's fame arises from the civilian life of General Ulysses S. Grant.
    He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant and his nickname was Lyss. When U.S. Congressman, Thomas L. Hamer nominated him to West Point he incorrect called him Ulysses Simpson Grant. Later Grant would call himself Ulysses S. Grant. After graduation of from West Point he became a quartermaster. During the civil war he was nicknamed "Unconditional Surrender" Grant.
