    Description

This is a rare camp sutler credit slip from a Union soldier in the 4th Rhode Island Volunteers dated May 25, 1864.  The slip is signed by the soldier, James Murphy of Company A, with the credit amount filled out.  This one is for two dollars.
The sutler would then give the slip to the Paymaster for payment, and the soldier's monthly pay would be debited that amount.
The 4th Rhode Island served from 1861-64, participating in a number of battles and campaigns including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the siege of Petersburg.
Henry Buckingham was the sutler for the 4th RI Volunteers.  Before the Civil War, he owned a grocery store, and he lived for 40 years after the war working in the real estate business.
The slip is also signed by a Lieutenant Irving R. Johnson, 4th RI Infantry, Comany A.
The document is in very good condition, with no tears, clear printing and writing, and only minor staining.  It measures approximately 6½ by 2¾ inches.
