German Machine Gunners with MG 08
You are bidding on an extremely rare Machine Gunner Badge of the German Army from World War I. The Badge comes from the liquidation of an old soldier's collection. In the First World War, a cruel weapon was used for the first time. The devastating effect was evident in the large battles of material.
In the Battle of the Somme, the British attacked the Germans massively from the front on July 1, 1916. Of the approximately 120,000 British soldiers who attacked the German positions on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, around 20,000 were killed, 8,000 of them in the first half hour alone, when the uncovered infantry was surprised by German machine-gun fire, and almost 36,000 wounded. In addition, about 2,100 men were reported missing. Individual regiments lost more than half of their soldiers within hours, entire divisions were considered non-existent. The first day of the Battle of the Somme is called the "blackest day in British military history" because of the heavy casualties.
The machine gunners of the German army were honored with their own badge. It shows the German machine gun 08. The MG 08 was water-cooled and mounted on a height-adjustable carriage (so-called carriage). With an aiming attachment for indirect fire, the MG 08 could also be used from cover. At the beginning of World War 1, the MG 08 was the German standard machine gun.
The badge shows the German MG 08 from the front, surrounded by a wreath of rifle cartridges. The back is galvanized sheet metal, on which the manufacturer's stamp of the Juncker company is stamped. There is a piece of felt as a middle layer.
