ETHEL MERMAN & MARY MARTINONE NIGHT ONLY
NEVER BEFORE and NEVER AGAIN
MAY 15 1977 Two electrifying stars of the musical theatre got together for the first time ever on a Broadway stage and brought down the house.
ETHEL MERMAN & MARY MARTIN, at the time, the "Two First Ladies of the American Musical Theatre". The two of them together sang up a storm -- all their greatest hits from all of their great shows. Mary Martin did right by
SOUTH PACIFIC, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, PETER PAN, I DO I DO.
And Ethel Merman could do no wrong with
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, GYPSY, CALL ME MADAM, ANYTHING GOES, SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS.
Then, in identical costumes, they entered at the top of their identical staircases, stopped momentarily to frame themselves in the curtained entranceway, then descended the stairs with sequins and flourishes as the orchestra struck up the title song from
HELLO DOLLY (
a role they had both played) and the audience trembled with pleasure. and sprang to their feet. And now here's the souvenir program in Fine condition with virtually no flaws. The program gives equal space to the two stars and it's chockablock with pictures. Plus an insert with reminiscences by Josh Logan. No fervent fan of musical theatre has a complete collection without the program from this historic event.
