This is a reproduction of plaques that hang outside of post offices and other public buildings throughout Ireland.
Detailed knotwork designs abound, surrounding and decorating the traditional Irish symbol, the folk or lever harp, with Ireland written in Gaelic below it.
The harp has been used as a political symbol of Ireland
for centuries. Its origin is from the time of
the famous High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, who played the harp.
The Irish Free State
has used a harp as its state symbol since 1922, which
was based on the harp in the
L
ibrary of
T
rinity College in Dublin. The harp also appears on
I
rish coins, from the
Mid
dle Ages to the current
Ir
ish euro coins.
Erin plaque is new and measures 11 inches tall, 9 inches wide, & 3/4 inch thick. W
ill weather naturally if outside, or to
retain original finish simply spray with a protective clear-coat before
exposing to the elements.
Pre-drilled hole at top of plaque for easy hanging.
