Description
I am excited to offer this beautiful antique Dutch polychrome tile with a unicorn. For the description of the tiles I consulted the book "Nederlandse Tegels" (Dutch Tiles) of Dr. C.H. De Jonge. In this book he states "this kind of tile was originally made in Rotterdam, but around 1635 the amount of tile factories in Holland increased and from then the tiles were made all over the country. The tiles were very popular and they were made with pictures of different animals like dogs, elephants, apes and even exotics like unicorns. The corners have a styled leaf decoration and this can be considered as the best North-Dutch tile art. These tiles were usually used in a square or in larger groups. Most of the these tiles seen today are damaged with chips and or cracks. This tile does not have any significant damage other than some crazing of age as shown and a tiny nick on the edge at the left top corner. All tiles have 2 nail holes because of the baking process when the tiles were held by nails in the oven. This tile measures 5 1/4" square and 7/16" thick. Please review all the pics as they are part of the description and I have stated my source for the description.
If you have any questions, please let me know and I am happy to provide more pictures. This beauty will be shipped by USPS Priority Mail insured and very well packed. Thank you!
