Description
0 Interim Deposit Receipt – Columbia, South CarolinaCertificates of this type were issued by various depositary offices throughout the Confederacy when bonds, which had been sold or committed were not readily available for issuance (this could be due to printing or transportation problems). This particular specimen is dated August 30, 1864 and was issued from the Depositary's Office, Columbia, South Carolina. The body of the document states
"THIS WILL CERTIFY, That
the Merchants Bank of S. C.
has paid in at this Office
Two
Hundred
Dollars, for which amount Registered Bonds of the Confederate States of America, bearing interest from this date, at the rate of four per cent. per annum, will be issued to him, under the Act approved February 17, 1864, upon the surrender of this certificate at this office."
. It is signed at the conclusion
"A. Laughlin/ By C. A. Saunders"
, indicating that the regular depositary, Alexander Laughlin, was out of the office on the day that this certificate was issued (it is also possible that Laughlin simply had Saunders do the signing as assistants do for their bosses today). No vignettes are present as these forms were strictly functional and would be redeemed upon issuance of the bond. According to the latest reference work on these certificates, a total of 5,050 pieces of this type were originally issued, though how many have survived the intervening 150+ years is unknown. While not technically a Confederate bond, these pieces make a great addition to any bond collection, showing as they do the difficulties that the Confederacy had in supplying the financial documents that were necessary for the prosecution of the war.
This document is in un-circulated condition, exhibiting the slightest amount of toning across the surface, and a few foxing spots scattered throughout. The lower and left margins are somewhat ragged, while the other two are straight and sharp. Each of the four corners is slightly rounded, though whether this was due to storage or at the time of its issuance is not known. Printed on off white paper, this historic piece measures approximately 4.25 x 8.25 inches. A great addition to any Confederate bond collection.
A .95 charge will be added for postage and insurance.
