1889 Ely S. Parker ANS (Grant secretuary; brevet brigadier general) [FP.258]

Description

1889 autograph note signed by Ely S. Parker (1828-1895), who served as a Lt. Col. During the civil war, and subsequently as aid de camp and secretary to U.S. Grant (including writing the final draft of the surrender terms at Appomatox).  Parker was brevetted as a brigadier general and was Commissioner of Indian Affairs during the Grant presidency, becoming the first native american to hold the office (Parker was a Tonawanda Seneca).  Document is addresse dto General N.M. Curtis, requesting a coopy of a report on the "physical, moral and religious condition" of the Indians of New York state.  Mounted to album page.
