1882 David McMurtrie Gregg letter civil war brigadier general [FP.314

Description

1882 ALS of David McMurtrie Gregg (1833-1916), a union cavalry general during the civil war.  1855 West Point grad, with western service; he was colonel of the 8th PA cavalry and then promoted to brigadier before Fredericksburg.  He had command of the cavalry corps in the Army of the Potomac before Sheridan's arrival; he received a brevet as major general.  Letter apologies for a missed visit.  Interesting item.
