    Description

    Here we have an
1880's G. TIEMANN Set of 3 Bone Handled Delicate Micro-Surgical Instruments with Storage Box
    .
George Tiemann started manufacturing medical and dental equipment in New York City in 1826.  The handle are stamped: G. TIEMANN & CO. In addition tow handle are stamped 'K', one is marked '2' and the other is S.S..  Because of the delicate nature of these instrument I thought they might be used in micro-surgery or eye surgery?
These instruments were manufactured in the "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood, bone, or gutta-percha (a hard rubber). These bone handles are n very good condition with the occasional tight and stable, hairline, age-related crack up where the metal shafts are attached. The metal parts have a nice clean aged patina. The instruments are approx. 4-1/2" to 5" long.  They come in their original wood storage box with early ornate brass hook closure.  The box measures 6-1/4"L x 1-1/4"W x 1"H.  This RARE set would make a great addition to a Tiemann or a Medical collection.
