    Description

    1872 note on New York tribune letterhead signed by Whitlaw Reid (1837-1912), who controlled the New York Tribune from 1872-1912 after assisting Horace Greeley until 1872.  He was the VP nominee for the republican party in 1892, and was ambassador to the United Kingdom 1905-1912 and had earlier been minister to france.   During the civil war Reid acted as a battlefield correspondent, notably at Shiloh and Gettysburg.
