    Description

    A wonderful 3 page handwritten letter from a Confederate soldier from Danville, Alabama.  It was written in May of 1863 after the battle of Day’s Gap.  He was a part of General Forrest’s command.  It has great details and says in small part:
    We have been stationed on the extreme left of Bragg’s Army which rests at Columbia for several months ever since the battle of Murfreesboro.  We were ordered down into North Alabama by Bragg on the 1st in check of an advancing in column of the enemy.  GeneralD is four thousand strong…
    We started in pursuit on the 5th day of the chase we came up with and engaged them at Day’s Gap a Sand Mountain in NA we had a brisk fight of about 2 hours, the enemy again retreated we following in close pursuit and kept up the race for several days skirmishing hourly with them, until they entered Georgia and reached within twenty miles of Rome, Georgia, there we overtook them and opened through General Forrest demanded an unconditional surrender which they finally agreed to and surrendering 1500 to less than 450…Captain Forrest was severely wounded also two others from our Company and I was left here with the command…
