1862 Civil War Officer Letter — 6th New Jersey Regiment — Battle of Seven Pines

Offered here is a very interesting letter written by
Lieutenant John Willian
(later brevet-brigadier general), commanding Company D,
6th New Jersey Volunteers
. Willian scratched out this short note to his parents on June 2, 1862, the day after the battle of
Seven Pines
. He briefly
described
his regiment's action in the battle, in which he reported having relieved
General Silas Casey
's division. Willian's division commander,
General Joseph Hooker
, was evidently pleased with the 6th's performance. The letter reads:
Camp of 6th Regt NJV June 2nd 1862
Dear father & mother
Since I receive your last letter we have moved from our Camp & been in another engagement. We were brought up to support Genl [Silas] Casey's division which acted very badly. Genl [Joseph] Hooker says the 5th [and] 6th NJ Vols saved the battle. Our Regt lost 24 killed wounded & missing. The loss in our Company was very light. None killed or wounded. Only one missing. John Gannon is the one missing.
Hoping this my find you in good health as it leaves me.
I am your aff son

The letter measures about 8" x 6 1/4". The bottom portion of the page was removed, likely by Willian. The paper is in very good condition, otherwise. No stiffness. Minor wear to edges and corners. Creases where originally folded. Light toning in margins.
