    Description

1857 letter signed by John James Abert (1788-1863), who was the long-time head of the Corps of Topographical Engineers.  Letter appears to be written by staff; datelined from the bureau and relating to a patented dredge boat.  Mounted to album page at left.  Abert became head of the bureau in 1829 and operated in that position until September 1861; he led the mapping of much of the American west.
